As the sun slipped into the Mekong River, we sat on its iconic banks and took in the shades of red and orange melting into the silvery sky. It was the end of our first day in Laos. I always feel a mix of melancholy and euphoria after the first day of a trip, whether I’ve been dreaming about in my head for weeks or a lifetime. There’s an excitement that it’s just beginning and a calm lingering sadness that it’s already one step closer to being over.
We had been riding around in a tuktuk all day, passing through small villages with sleepy dogs in roadside cafes and even sleepier tuktuk drivers hanging from hammocks languid from the afternoon heat. Old women gossiped while perched on plastic chairs. Trains of cows in every size made their way to greener fields. The warm red dust kicked up from passing motorbikes settled on our skin.
It was the beginning of a journey. A journey that would take us to majestic landscapes that have been a constant witness to a country’s triumphs, hardships, love and loss. It was a journey that would open our minds and help us understand, understand a people, ourselves, and a connection to the world. Thinking about it gives me butterflies in my heart…

It’s early morning and England is donning white. The sun is a cold yellow behind colder emerald hills. The first snows of winter float down on my eyelashes and onto willowy branches, silencing the world for a moment. That is, until the neighborhood children come out with their sleds and shouts of joy and delight. We’re all caught in our very own snow globe, our own fantasies. | Northumberland, England

A Trip Down the Coast
Before Christmas, Ben and I took a roadtrip down to the southernmost point of England’s coastline, where I was introduced to the country’s wild romantic beauty. On the first night, we stayed in a beautiful hotel called Endsleigh where you could picture yourself holing up for the winter drinking scotch and reading Jane Austen novels beside the endless supply of fireplaces.
